Join us for our second DOVIA Book Club selection, Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. This memoir explores the importance of hospitality in the restaurant industry, but it's also very applicable to our roles as volunteer administrators.  It's a guide to the principles and practices of hospitality and shares insights about teamwork, leadership, and quality service.  Be sure to also sign up for the June Discussion session!

DOVIA is not able to provide your book, so please purchase your own or check out from your local library.

Data storytelling is the art and science of turning insights into a narrative designed to move an audience to action.  Today’s volunteer resource professional is immersed in data points for use in informed and strategic decision making.  These insights can be further illuminated through effective communication techniques such as data storytelling.
Attendees will become familiar with the data storytelling process, learn a simple three-step method for creating more effective data visualizations, and leave with immediately actionable takeaways to create more compelling data communication.

Roseanna Galindo, ECBA, CAVS, is the founder of Periscope Business Process Analysis and a seasoned leader with over 30 years in volunteer administration, 16 of which were in healthcare.  Her work bridges business analysis and communications to help nonprofit organizations achieve measurable outcomes. Notably, she developed the Volunteer Satisfaction Index (VSI), a groundbreaking tool in volunteer metrics, published in the Journal of Social Service Research.  Holding degrees in Media Arts (B.A.)  and Organizational Communication (M.A.) from California State University, Chico, Roseanna has also served intermittently on the faculty for over two decades. She combines her academic background and industry experience to offer impactful communication skill-based workshops and training, all aimed at enhancing data savvy and organizational effectiveness.

We all need time every now and then to get outside and re-balance.  DOVIA Colorado is thrilled to offer our own version of forest bathing, which we're calling garden bathing!

Background:  Forest bathing, also known as Shinrin-yoku, aims to immerse individuals in nature for enhanced well-being. By engaging senses in serene environments like forests, it promotes relaxation and stress reduction through activities such as mindful walks and breathing exercises. The primary goal is to foster a deeper connection with nature while disconnecting from the fast-paced modern world.  The benefits of forest bathing are manifold, including reduced cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, and boosted immunity. It also improves mood, enhances focus and creativity, and fosters appreciation for the environment. Ultimately, forest bathing offers a holistic approach to well-being, promoting harmony between humans and nature for a healthier, more balanced life.

This session of garden bathing will be supported by Patty Jackson.  Patty is the Volunteer Manager at Swallow Hill Music and has been in volunteer management for 10 years.  She is looking forward to introducing you to this excellent way to connect with the beauty of nature and to de-stress.

Volunteer offices in the non-profit world are all vying for a small slice of the community volunteer pool.  This presentation will explain how to recognize volunteers for their impact.  Sometimes volunteer positions are very tangible to measure, sometimes the intangible touch they provide is what we as leaders need to highlight.  Volunteers mostly give of themselves, and that gift is not measurable by only hours served or captured in surveys, but is also measured in the way volunteers impact your organization.  We will always have volunteer opportunities and positions that need filled.  However, let’s start to capture and highlight the impact volunteers provide.  The impact of volunteerism.  The VIMPACT.  The smile we cannot measure, the helping hand that they provide, the loyalty to our organization, the experience/skills that they bring.  The volunteer impact is priceless and the difference the volunteers provide, immensely and unequivocally immeasurable.

Linda Fisher is the Regional Director for Guest Services for UCHealth in Northern Colorado.  This role encompasses volunteer services, guest services, retail operations, spiritual care, and parking management.  Linda started with hospital volunteers in 1990 working exclusively with Auxiliaries.  In 2000, she was recruited to oversee and rebuild a hospital volunteer program in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  In 2006, she was hired by Poudre Valley Health System, now UCHealth, to start the Medical Center of the Rockies hospital volunteer and guest program.  In 2015, her level of responsibility expanded to Poudre Valley Hospital and in 2020 for Greeley Hospital.

Linda received her master’s degree from Regis University. Linda also received her CAVS certification in 2014.  Linda was the 2021-2023 co-chair of the Beryl Institute volunteer professional community and continues as an active member of this group.  She also serves on the patient experience advisory board.  Linda was the 2019 President of AHVRP which was the national organization for healthcare volunteers through the American Hospital Association.  Linda has also had the privilege to serve on various boards involving volunteer management, fundraising or team dynamics.
